Mathematics

Mathematics Faculty

“It is not knowledge, but the act of learning, not possession but the act of getting there, which grants the greatest enjoyment”

C.F. Gauss

In Year 11 and 12, the mathematics courses offered include:

  • Mathematics Standard 2
  • Mathematics Advanced
  • Mathematics Extension 1
  • Mathematics Extension 2

“The value of a problem is not so much coming up with the answer as in the ideas and attempted ideas it forces on the would be solver.”

I.N. Herstein

Mathematics Standard 2

This course provides students with the opportunity to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills in working mathematically, improve their skills to solve problems relating to their present and future needs, and improve their understanding of how to communicate in a concise and systematic manner. For more information click here.

"I decided to study Mathematics Standard 2 because of its usefulness and application in everyday scenarios. Everything studied in this course can be applied in future life, with the in depth exploration of financial maths and an understanding of the maths associated with owning a car and earning money."

Eleanor Day, Year 12 Mathematics Standard 2

Mathematics Advanced

This course provides students with the opportunity to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills in mathematics and working mathematically. Students have the opportunity to develop ways of thinking and use mathematics as a powerful way of viewing and modelling the world to investigate patterns, order, generality and uncertainty. For more information click here.

“Each problem that I solved became a rule, which served afterwards to solve other problems”

R.Descartes

Mathematics Extension 1

This course provides students with the opportunity to develop thorough knowledge, understanding and skills in working mathematically and in communicating concisely and precisely. Students have the opportunity to develop rigorous mathematical arguments and proofs and use mathematical models extensively. Students develop their awareness of the interconnected nature of mathematics, its beauty and its functionality. For more information click here.

Mathematics Extension 2

This course provides opportunities at progressively higher levels for students to acquire knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to concepts within areas of mathematics that have applications in an increasing number of contexts. Students have the opportunity to develop strong mathematical manipulation skills and a deep understanding of the fundamental ideas of algebra and calculus, as well as an appreciation of mathematics as an activity with its own intrinsic value involving invention, intuition and exploration. For more information click here.

"In Mathematics Extension 2, we have been studying various mathematical properties and theorems that are extremely interesting across a range of areas in mathematics from vectors to calculus. I chose to study this course to develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of the subject. The course is full of interesting activities and topics that allow me to develop conclusions to challenging problems in a range of different ways. It's really just a huge problem solving activity that's enjoyable to complete."

Angus Chipman, Year 12 Mathematics Extension 2

“A GREAT discovery solves a great problem but there is a grain of discovery in any problem”

George Polya

Investigations

Students studying all mathematics courses complete an investigation assessment task that allows their teachers to provide opportunities to gather evidence about the achievement of a range of outcomes, the students ability to work mathematically and the demonstrating of knowledge and skills in different ways. In our investigations students use technology to investigate, organise and interpret information in a range of contexts. Our students prepare reports and communicate using mathematical language, notation, diagrams and graphs.
