English Faculty

The study of English in Stage 6 involves students engaging with complex texts at a time when they are developing a sense of self in the world. Developing skills as independent thinkers, confident and articulate communicators and engaged members of the community will enable students to make sense of their lives, engage with a complex, changing world and develop an appreciation of literature, culture and learning.

At Freshwater Senior Campus, students are developing or have developed an understanding of themselves and are seeking stimulating learning experiences that recognises their growing independence. The study of English will stimulate this process as well as encourage the development of empathy as students explore and develop their understanding of other perspectives. This process develops as students respond to and compose texts of increasing sophistication and complexity.

English is the only compulsory subject for the HSC.

English study is mandatory in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.

In English, students learn about the study and use of the English language in its various textual forms. These encompass spoken, written and visual texts through which meaning is shaped, conveyed, interpreted and reflected. Complexity increases as students progress through their schooling.

Developing proficiency in English enables students to take their place as confident communicators; critical and imaginative thinkers; lifelong learners; and informed, active participants in Australian society. Their understanding of English through knowledge and skills acquisition is essential to their intellectual, social and emotional development.

The study of English should develop a love of literature and learning and be challenging and enjoyable. It develops skills to enable students to experiment with ideas and expression, to become active, independent and lifelong learners, to work with each other and to reflect on their learning.

In Year 11 and 12, the study of English is mandatory. Courses offered include:

  • English Standard
  • English Advanced
  • English Extension 1
  • English Extension 2

English Standard

English (Standard) is designed for students who wish to engage with a range of stimulating and contemporary texts that will give them the opportunity to become confident communicators and independent thinkers. The course will challenge students to reflect on a complex, changing world and articulate a response that will prepare them for a meaningful social, personal and vocational life.

English Advanced

English (Advanced) is designed for students who seek to undertake the challenge of studying literature, classical and complex texts and applying higher order thinking skills in a range of ways. Students will engage in an ongoing process of composition and reflection designed to develop their critical and personal awareness. Students who are considering applying for an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) should choose Advanced English.

English Extension

English (Extension) is designed for students undertaking English (Advanced) who seek a more challenging, complex and intensive experience of English literature and culture. They are students who enjoy independent work, applying higher order thinking skills and researching areas of their own interest. Students engage in a sustained process of composition in a range of forms and genres.
