Personal Development, Health and Physical Education

In Year 11 and 12, courses available include:

  • Community and Family Studies
  • Personal Development, Health and Physical Education

Personal development, health and physical education has great relevance to students with career aspirations in the areas of sports and health sciences, nutrition, sports coaching, personal training, medicine and education.

Our unique facilities at Freshwater ensure that students have the potential to explore the practical aspects of theoretical content. Students have the opportunity to take advantage of indoor and outdoor playing courts, a fully functioning weights room and sports fields as well as visiting specialist training centres when learning about aerobic and anaerobic training.

The Stage 6 PDHPE course continues to study the themes of intellectual, social, emotional, physical and spiritual development of students that begins in K-10 PDHPE. It builds on this knowledge to enable students to maintain healthy, active, safe lifestyles and improve their health status.

The course also investigates a social view of health that includes the principles of social justice, diversity and building supportive environments that nurture and support health. Examining individual, family and community values of health also enables students to develop understanding and look for sustainable solutions for better health.

Students also study in detail human movement and physiology. Understanding how the body moves and the structures and functions that are integral to a healthy body are key themes.

Students have the opportunity to apply theoretical components in practical ways, though a great majority of course time is theoretical.

The PDHPE Syllabus includes two 120 hour courses.
