Creative and Performing Arts

Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) Faculty

In creative arts, students discover a variety of art forms through a study of dance, drama, music and visual arts.

Studying the creative arts, students learn to appreciate, compose, listen, make and perform. Each art form has its own unique knowledge and skills, elements or concepts as well as a capacity to inspire and enrich lives.

Students must study 100 hours of both music and visual arts during Years 7 to 10. They also have an opportunity to further develop their knowledge and skills in other art forms through elective subjects including drama, dance, photography and visual design. Students can then select from a range of courses in Years 11 to 12.

The range of courses offered at Freshwater Senior Campus include:

  • Dance
  • Drama
  • VET Entertainment
  • Music 1
  • Music 2
  • Music extension
  • Visual arts

At Freshwater Senior Campus the Creative and Performing Arts faculty offers curricular and extracurricular opportunities in dance, drama, entertainment, music and visual arts.

Freshwater CAPA staff are focussed on offering structured, creative and supportive learning experiences to facilitate achievement to the highest performance and intellectual standards.

The faculty focus in the Preliminary Courses is on development and refinement of skills so that students can make informed decisions in relation to their HSC options. Year 12 students are guided and supported in their choices and actions in relation to the production of HSC submitted works and performances as well as core course components.

Literacy development and refinement, through the integration of ALARM (A Learning And Responding Matrix), is a faculty priority and writing is a significant component of theoretical lessons in all subjects.

The facilities at Freshwater senior Campus include a 250 seat performance theatre, music practice rooms, a dedicated Dance/Drama studio and large art rooms. Students are encouraged to use the extensive technology available at Freshwater to facilitate their learning in CAPA subjects.

Fixtures on the annual school calendar are dance, drama and music performance nights as well as the Body of Work Exhibition held in Term 3 each year. Entertainment students provide technical support  for these events.
